SECRETS TO SUCCESS:
Enjoy what you do, be passionate – This gives you ‘life’s buzz’ and the will to do anything and inspire everyone!
Have a vision and don’t be afraid of being audacious – Your personal vision keeps you going when the pressure is on and your work vision is fundamental to guide your team to success.
If you don’t make bold moves you’ll never make huge gains!
WOW! – Have it in everything you do.
Stand out from the crowd, not by being loud but by doing what others wished they had thought of first.
At Luken & May WOW also stands for ‘We Offer Ways’ – we are our customers’ solution to make their job easier.
Think smart and be focused – Always ask “How can I do this better? Am I focusing on the right area?”
Don’t waste time on non-productive areas (think 80:20 rule).
Have an open mind, don’t be blinkered and make it happen.
Know the power of ‘number crunching’ and systems -There is nothing complicated about ‘financials’ so have your finger on the pulse.
Have systems in place for everything, they form the foundation and structure of your business and home thus allowing you to create opportunities, innovate and have fun rather than getting lost in the mechanics.

Treat everyone as you like to be treated yourself. Be yourself. Be natural, Be honest. Be happy. Be ethical. Try to lead a balanced life.

DONNA HICKEY
I retired from the University of Richmond in 2013 as Professor of English Emerita. During my tenure, I published several books, two on Rhetoric and Style: Developing a Written Voice and Figures of Thought (on structural metaphor); and two edited volumes with co-authors. Additionally, I published an array of articles on both literature and rhetoric and won three university teaching awards, one of which was for technology and teaching/learning.
In the mid-90’s, I became a seminar leader in the Epiphany Project, a national project funded by Annenberg whose purpose was faculty development, curriculum change, and campus support. In that role, I travelled with other leaders across the country, helping faculty use technology available at their schools to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom.
At Richmond, I directed the Writing Program, creating our Writing Across the Curriculum program which gained national recognition. After serving for some years as Senior Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences, I returned to teaching full-time, then skated into retirement. I enjoy the arts, spending more time with friends, planning travel with my husband (recently a Christmas Market river cruise on the Rhine), and riding my horse, Ryder, who reminds me to stop, breathe deeply, value the moment, and leave the rest behind.

HEATHER SHERWIN
My career as a professional fundraiser spans 32 years working mostly in the arts. I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and after college and a few years in the fashion business in New York City, I returned. One of my greatest career achievements was raising $19 million to restore an historic theater, The Hanna, in downtown Cleveland. The repertory theater company, called Great Lakes Theater Festival, made it their permanent home and performs Shakespeare and the classics for adult audiences as weIl as 20,000 students every year.
My most proud personal achievement is the renovation of a derelict 125 year old Victorian house in downtown Columbia, SC. It was literally falling down but my partner and I took it on and it will stand for another 125 years. Most recently I moved from Norfolk after running a campaign to expand the Perry Glass studio at the Chrysler Museum of Art. I married a lifelong Richmonder, Scott Pulley and am enjoying all that Richmond has to offer.
